History of Our School

Formal education first arrived in Clonlisk in 1857 when, on the first application of Fr. O'Leary C.C., to the Board of Commissioners of Education, a school was first built on a site opposite the present school. The site was donated by a Mr Maunsell of Clonlisk House, the doors and windows having been taken from St. Trian's church in Brosna.

The school closed in 1960 when a two roomed school was built on a site donated by the Shanahan family. A new room was added to this building in 1993 to facilitate the appointment of a third teacher.

In 2006 the Department of Education gave Clonlisk B.O.M. the green light to employ a fourth mainstream teacher and a learning support teacher. This decision was very welcome, as was the decision of the Government to provide a substantial grant for a major extension. Work began on this project in January 2007. We now have a new state of the art extension, comprising of four new spacious classrooms. The original two rooms were insulated and all existing windows were replaced with modern aluminium windows, in keeping with the new structure.

In 2008, a commemorative, historical book entitled "Clonlisk N.S. -Rolling Back The Years 1857-2008", was published to celebrate the official re-opening of the new school. This valuable publication is the culmination of many hours of hard work by the Book Committee in collecting and recording material. Their success in weaving a web of rare historical significance is greatly appreciated.
